UTV Troubleshooting Guide
Proper UTV repair starts with diagnosing the issue. After all, you can’t resolve a problem if you don’t know its source. Luckily, the experts at Vey’s Powersports have created this guide to troubleshooting UTV maintenance problems.
Battery Issues
There are a number of potential issues that can occur with your UTV’s battery. For example, your starter might not be functioning properly. This can be caused by the battery being dead, insufficiently charged, or having a poor terminal connection. If you have a battery that fails to recharge, it’s usually either expired or has been run down completely and will need to be replaced. Corroded terminals signified a poor terminal connection, which can be fixed by cleaning, tightening, and lubricating the terminals. If you have a refillable battery and the electrolyte levels drop rapidly, this is usually due to a hole or crack in the electrolyte cell itself.
Engine Trouble
If your UTV’s engine is not putting out as much power as it should, there may be a part that needs to be replaced. Specifically, check the injector, spark plugs, ignition coil, and crankshaft position sensors to see if anything is dirty, clogged, or broken. If your UTV’s engine is overheating too quickly, the cause might be low coolant levels, a loose or broken radiator cap, a motor-driven fan that isn’t turning, or a corroded coolant flow path. Be very thorough when you check your cooling system. Finally, your engine might struggle to start. This can be caused by insufficient fuel flow, an issue that can stem from the fuel tank, filter, electric fuel pump, or injector. This issue can also be caused by a weak battery or water getting into the fuel system.
General Problems
The battery and engine aren’t the only parts of your UTV that might need maintenance. Brakes that grind or fail can be caused by insufficient brake oil levels, air in the braking system, or loose brake plates. If the vehicle itself doesn’t seem to have enough power, it might be a sign of a sliding CVT transmission or malfunctioning brakes.
