There's no doubt about it; buying a used ATV can be a daunting experience, especially for a first-time buyer. Questions such as what you should be looking for are just a few of the concerns for buyers like you. The fact is that you're going to come across a lot of lemons out there, and we at Vey’s Powersports understand that as well. That’s why the following includes items you need to look out for when you're ready to purchase a used ATV. For more assistance, stop by our location in El Cajon, California, proudly serving those from San Diego and Santee.

Step Back & Check The ATV's Appearance

If you show up at the buyer's location and see a dirty quad with its paint chipping off, it's possible that other parts of the model have not been maintained properly. You should also look at the location that it's being stored in. The weather can be unforgiving, and thus a four-wheeler left out in the elements may have damaged internal components.

Check the ATV's Exhaust

Warning! Never allow the owner to warm up the ATV for you. This is because you want to know how it starts cold, especially when it comes to the exhaust. A warm quad will usually start up nicely with little to no fuss, but you don't want that right now. You want to start the ATV up while it's cold in order to listen for any odd sounds or see any unstable components.

Look Into the Fuel Tank

Not taking the time to look into the fuel tank is possibly one of the most common mistakes made by buyers. The fact is that you're going to need to be wary when dealing with any used ATVs. First, make sure to bring a flashlight for this next step. Open the four-wheeler’s fuel cap and shine the light into it. You should be able to see light amber-colored fuel as well as the metal interior of the tank. Any dark liquids are usually old fuel and must be drained before you use it. However, if you notice chunks within the tank, that may be a sign of rust or sediment.
