Preparing Your UTV or ATV for Spring
As much as you might like to jump on your UTV or ATV after a long winter, you first need to go through the steps of dewinterization. Your machine requires special care to get it ready for warmer weather. If you complete all of the spring prep steps, you will keep your ATV or UTV running smoothly for years to come. Main Dewinterization Requirements
You should always check the owner's manual for your specific model of UTV or ATV. It provides the best dewinterization guide for your machine, including what order to complete the tasks. You should check all of the parts on your ATV or UTV to ensure they are running smoothly. You do not want loose bolts or leaking fluids on your first springtime ride.
Look at the Fuel System
Unless you have added a stabilizer to your fuel system, you might need to drain the old gasoline. You should clean the tank thoroughly, as well as fill it with new gasoline. Spring prep is a great time to look at the other parts of the fuel system, too. An up-to-date fuel system means a well-running machine.
Check the Battery
If you are familiar with winterization, you will have charged it at least once a month during the winter. Make sure you put the battery back and that it is fully charged for the riding season.
Monitor the Oil and Fluid Levels
If you have low oil or other fluids, you might have sprung a leak over the winter. Wintertime is a prime time for seals to begin leaking. Leaks can compromise the performance of your machine. Spring prep is an excellent time to change the oil and the oil filter. Other fluids to check include radiator and brake fluid. Your UTV or ATV will ride better with all of these critical fluids at optimum levels.
Other Areas to Clean and Check
Other dewinterization items to put on your checklist this spring include cleaning the air filter and checking the tire pressure. You might like to take this opportunity to change the air filter as well. You are more likely to catch any issues if you take a little extra time to look over your ATV or UTV.
